I wanted to share with you the story behind the project, so here I go.
My name is Paco Gramaje and this is the story of Girasomnis:
I think the first thing I registered with the aka Girasomnis was back in 2005. In those years I used to write poetry mixing them with images. At that time I was beginning to discover my great hobby: audiovisual creativity with a digital camera, which I had actually bought first to take photos. Short films of various genres, documentaries, video poetry and video art “in my own way” became my creative escape from my job as an engineer. Little by little I started to consider the possibility of trying to dedicate myself to the audiovisual world professionally. The loss of some relatives made me think about many things and I took the big decision to leave a secure job to try to make that hobby my job. It was 2009 and I was 33 years old.
I guess it was in 2010 when an artistic collective from Madrid offered me a collaboration and I made my first video-dance project. That job made me discover the audiovisual potential of dance performances and made me totally fall in love with it.
It was also in those years (2010-2012) that I began experimenting with audiovisual performance and human mapping with the project Kreomancer and I started to create the first two pieces of the show Girasomnis with the choreographer Bárbara Fritsche.
Thanks to those projects I was able to work on the visual design of the musical “Hoy no me puedo levantar” in 2013.
After that project I decided to create a complete dance and visual show under the Girasomnis label, creating all the visual content and music. A show that we premiered at the end of 2014 and that during 2015 and 2016 toured Spain, the Dominican Republic and some festivals in India and China. In each performance I felt that the project had very good acceptance by the public, but the box office profits did not cover the costs and I had to make the decision to stop touring theaters and sell the project to private corporate events. The Girasomnis artistic project was therefore frozen… but it opened many doors for me to continue creating other commercial shows for brands and commissions for other dance companies between 2015 and 2020. Some of these shows and the best pieces of the first Girasomnis project you can see them here.
March 2020, the big shock we all know… Many months without work and time to rethink everything again and look for alternatives to the public shows with which I have been earning my living all these years. Time to experiment with other formats such as augmented and virtual reality and chroma key recording techniques for virtual productions. Meanwhile, in my usual sleepless nights. I began to conceptualise the new universe of this second Girasomnis project and the decision to take up this artistic project to create again without any directives from third parties. Time to become Girasomnis again and follow this new dream.
A project that will be presented in different chapters and in different formats that we will introduce to you throughout this year 2021 and 2022. Virtual formats for this new normal that awaits us…The sales of the first chapter will be used to continue the production of the second and subsequent chapters. So buy a painting if you want to see more projects!
And if all goes well… let’s hope so… The final chapter will be a physical show in the spring of 2023.
